Prince George is turning 8 years old tomorrow, and his parents Prince William and Kate Middleton marked the occasion by sharing a new photo of him, like they do each year. This photo features George looking decidedly more casual than the world last saw him (in a suit at the England vs. Italy Euro 2020 final soccer game). He smiles gleefully at the camera, wearing a navy and orange striped polo.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge captioned their Instagram, “Turning eight(!) tomorrow ??,” and credited Kate for taking the photo.

Just what is George like at age 8? Not a lot is known about the eldest Cambridge child’s life, as his parents have done their best to give him the most privacy possible considering his royal title.

But in 2020, George’s godmother Julia Samuel, his late grandmother Princess Diana’s best friend, spoke a little on a podcast about George’s personality. “He is amazing,” she said. “He’s funny and feisty and cheeky and God, [Diana] would have loved him so much.”

And in 2019, a source spoke to The Sun about George as a 6-year-old. “George likes people,” the source said. “Whether he has learned this from his father or it simply comes naturally, he first likes to be sure that he can trust them. Growing up surrounded by courtiers, you learn fast that not everybody has your best interests at heart.

“While the outside world sees him as an infant, George is very much his own man,” the source, who spent time with George growing up, added. “With younger siblings Charlotte and Louis taking a lot of the attention at home, George is learning to be more independent. Yes, he has been protected from some of the realities about being third in line to the throne, but it is almost as if he is hardwired to feel a sense of responsibility.”
