On Erdem’s FW17 runway set, there were artful scatterings of furniture that looked like debris from a grand chateau locked up for the year: a stuffed polar bear under a dust sheet, tangled chandeliers discarded on the floor, stacked and shredded wicker chairs, decaying curtain drapes, giant stone urns from a sprawling garden and studded traveling trunks. The opening soundtrack was taken from All About Eve, the 12-Academy-award-nominated film starring Bette Davis, and later, voiceovers from Alfred Hitchcock’s 1940 film of Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca. An American psychological thriller mystery note accompanied proceedings; Erdem cited Mrs Danvers, the de Winters’ deranged housekeeper, as a reference. The story was a fitting gothic tale to his beautiful parade of faded glamour.
